Met Gala 2024: dresses made out of sand, corsets and power poses

It’s fashion’s biggest night! The 2024 Met Gala red carpet is officially underway at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year’s exhibition – Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion – examines how technology can breathe new life into garments that are too old and fragile to be worn again.

Tonight, guests will climb the museum’s landmark steps wearing looks that nod to this year’s dress code, “The Garden of Time”, and you can see all of the Met Gala 2024 looks right here as the night unfolds. The sartorial theme takes its name from a JG Ballard story about a count who – to stave off an angry mob approaching his castle – plucks individual roses from his garden to slow down time, until eventually there are no flowers remaining. Between the story’s dystopian undertones and the exhibit’s emphasis on old and new, we can expect a red carpet filled with everything from bold florals to techno-inspired fashion – and perhaps even a Sleeping Beauty reference or two.

As ever the guest-list for the gala, which fundraises for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute, has been kept tightly under wraps, but fans already know to expect co-hosts Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez and Zendaya, who are serving as co-chairs alongside Vogue’s Anna Wintour.
